Part 1
Hometown
Where is your hometown?
My hometown is a medium-sized city in southern China. It is not as famous as Beijing or Shanghai, but it has a relaxed pace, good local food, and several parks near the river.
The answer is concise, but it still gives location, scale, comparison, and detail.
Has your hometown changed much in recent years?
Yes, quite a lot. The city used to feel very traditional, but now there are more subway lines, coffee shops, and shared workspaces. I think it has become more convenient, although a little less quiet.
This answer shows change over time and adds a balanced opinion.
Band 6 vs Band 8 comparison
Band 6 pattern
My hometown is nice. It has many buildings and many people. I like it because my family lives there.
Band 8 direction
My hometown is a coastal city with a calm, practical atmosphere. I like it because it still feels familiar, but it has become much easier to get around since the new metro lines opened.
The stronger answer uses precise description, explains the reason, and adds a recent development instead of repeating basic adjectives.
Part 2
Describe a Place
Describe a place you enjoy visiting.
One place I really enjoy visiting is a riverside park near my old school. It is about twenty minutes from my home, and it has a long walking path, small tea stalls, and benches facing the water. I usually go there in the evening when the temperature drops. What I like most is that it gives me a break from screens and traffic. Last year, I went there almost every weekend while preparing for exams, and it helped me clear my mind.
This answer covers location, details, activity, personal story, and feeling.
Band 6 vs Band 8 comparison
Band 6 pattern
I want to describe a park. It is near my home. It is beautiful and I go there with friends. I like it very much.
Band 8 direction
I would describe a riverside park that became my regular escape during exam season. It is not spectacular, but the open path, evening breeze, and quiet benches make it feel separate from the rest of the city.
The Band 8 version frames the place with a clear personal meaning and uses sensory details without becoming overdramatic.
Part 3
Technology
How has technology changed the way people communicate?
It has made communication much faster, but not always deeper. For example, people can now send voice messages or join video calls instantly, which is useful for work and long-distance families. At the same time, quick messages can replace more thoughtful conversations, so I think technology improves access but does not automatically improve relationship quality.
The answer is balanced, abstract enough for Part 3, and supported by examples.
Band 6 vs Band 8 comparison
Band 6 pattern
Technology is good because people can talk online. But sometimes it is bad because people use phones too much.
Band 8 direction
Technology has removed many practical barriers to communication, especially distance and cost. However, it has also made some interactions more fragmented, because people often reply quickly without giving full attention.
The stronger answer uses abstract nouns, explains cause and effect, and gives a more precise downside.
