IELTS Speaking Part 2

IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Place

Prepare for an IELTS Speaking Describe a Place cue card with a one-minute plan, Band 6 and Band 8 answers, useful vocabulary, and timed practice.

Place cue cards are useful because one prepared story can adapt to a city, building, park, cafe, museum, or quiet place. Your job is to organize the answer clearly for two minutes.

How to answer IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Place

Common questions

Answer structure

  1. Name the place and say where it is.
  2. Describe what it looks or feels like.
  3. Explain what you usually do there.
  4. Tell one small story connected to the place.
  5. Finish with why it matters to you.

Sample answers

Describe a place you enjoy visiting.

One place I really enjoy visiting is a riverside park near my old school. It is about twenty minutes from my home, and it has a long walking path, small tea stalls, and benches facing the water. I usually go there in the evening when the temperature drops. What I like most is that it gives me a break from screens and traffic. Last year, I went there almost every weekend while preparing for exams, and it helped me clear my mind.

This answer covers location, details, activity, personal story, and feeling.

Band 6 vs Band 8 comparison

Band 6 pattern

I want to describe a park. It is near my home. It is beautiful and I go there with friends. I like it very much.

Band 8 direction

I would describe a riverside park that became my regular escape during exam season. It is not spectacular, but the open path, evening breeze, and quiet benches make it feel separate from the rest of the city.

The Band 8 version frames the place with a clear personal meaning and uses sensory details without becoming overdramatic.

Useful vocabulary

a regular escape

Use this for a place you visit to relax.

facing the water

Use this for visual layout.

separate from the rest of the city

Use this to describe atmosphere.

clear my mind

Use this for emotional benefit.

Common mistakes

Weak pattern: Describing only appearance.

Correction: Add what you do there and why you remember it.

A place answer becomes stronger when it includes action and personal meaning.

Weak pattern: Trying to use rare vocabulary in every sentence.

Correction: Use a few natural phrases and focus on fluency.

Part 2 rewards sustained speaking, not forced word choice.
